A laser beam consists of a single wavelength or color, forming a column of extremely high-intensity light. CO2 lasers typically emit infrared wavelengths, making them invisible to the human eye. The beam travels through the machine’s beam path with a diameter of approximately 3/4 of an inch from the laser resonator. Several mirrors, or “beam benders,” may be employed to ultimately focus the light onto the material. Before reaching the material, the laser beam passes through the nozzle’s bore, which may also allow compressed gases like oxygen or nitrogen to flow through.
In the laser cutting head, a specialized lens or curved mirror is used to focus the laser beam effectively. For the focal point to be perfectly circular, consistent, and centered in the nozzle, careful focusing of the beam is essential. When concentrated into a single point, the heat density at that location becomes extremely high.
This high power density enables rapid heating, melting, and vaporization. When cutting mild steel, the laser beam can initiate a typical “oxy-fuel” burning process, with pure oxygen serving as the laser cutting gas, much like an oxy-fuel torch.
With our CNC laser cutter, the cutting head moves over the metal plate in the precise shape required to cut out the desired portion. Plates equipped with a capacitive height control mechanism ensure a highly accurate distance, which is crucial for determining the position of the focal point relative to the plate.
Despite the numerous variables that can influence cut quality, laser cutting remains a consistent, reliable, and highly precise process when all factors are properly controlled.
